Three Bills bits
blog by Ben Tsujimoto • August 27, 2012 @ 9:04am
1) After Vince Young’s 12-26, two interception performance against Pittsburgh in the third preseason game, GM Buddy Nix and head coach Chan Gailey felt inclined to bring in another QB to compete with—and likely supplant—Young and fellow backup Tyler Thigpen. (Update: Vince Young has officially been released from the Buffalo Bills).
Both the Bills and Seahawks have agreed in principle on a trade of Tarvaris Jackson to Buffalo in return for a draft pick, but Buddy Nix and the Bills’ front office is negotiating contract details with Jackson to complete the deal. The 29-year-old signal-caller is in the second year of a two-year, $8 million deal, and according to the Associated Press, the Bills believe that $4 million is too much to pay a backup.
A mobile quarterback, Jackson started 14 games for 7-9 Seattle last season, throwing more touchdowns (14) than interceptions (13), but fumbling a rather ridiculous nine times. He’s an excellent choice for a backup job, even if it will take him a solid month to get up to speed with the Bills’ offense.
The Buffalo News’ Tim Graham spoke with former NFL head coach and long-time offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who commented on the probable addition of Jackson:
“It’s common sense and good judgment. In this passing league, when you lose that No. 1 guy, you’re basically taking the air out of your team completely.”
While it’s certainly disappointing that the Bills aren’t content with Young, a rather ballyhooed acquisition, and Thigpen, who’s very familiar with Gailey’s scheme, Buffalo could release both Young (set to make $1.25 million guaranteed) and Thigpen ($2.5 million) to enter the year with Fitzpatrick, Jackson and Brad Smith as the three QBs on the roster.
2) Also, in order to meet the NFL’s demands for a 75-man roster by Aug. 28, the Bills cut WR David Clowney, LB Danny Batten, DE Sean Ferguson, TE Fendi Onobun, CB Prince Miller, S Nick Sukay, WR Derek Session, G Jake Vermiglio. The team also placed TE Mike Caussin on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he’ll be inactive for at least the first six games of the season. Buffalo also reached an injury settlement with S Josh Nesbitt, a former QB for Gailey at Georgia Tech, who has been released.
The release of Clowney is at least temporary comfort for young Bills receiver Naaman Roosevelt, who remains firmly on the roster bubble. With the recent news that fellow receiver Marcus Easley does have practice squad eligibility, it’s possible that the UB grad could sneak his way back onto the roster.
3) The Bills’ final preseason game is at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. On Friday, the team will be forced to finalize its 53-player roster.
