Tim Hortons Backyard Classic set for Sunday - VIDEO

blog by Kathryn Przybyla • January 24, 2013 @ 9:04am
With all proceeds benefiting Hasek’s Heroes, the Tim Hortons Backyard Classic is set to be an extremely successful event.
Taking place this Sunday, the tournament will kick off at 9 a.m, at the Rose Garden (2753 Wehrle Drive) in Amherst. This year marks an expansion year for the tournament, with a capacity to host 96 teams for years to come as the Backyard Classic grows.
The four different divisions will host middle school, high school, college and adult hockey players from all over to compete for the top prize. Not just for kids, the Backyard Classic has featured a few prospect players from the OHL, USHL and Jr. Sabres in past years.
Registration for the tournament closed this past December, but this event should be a great day to catch some outdoor hockey in Western New York. The team’s registration for four players and a goalie will go towards creating an educational center in the Cazenovia Ice Rink for the South Buffalo community, especially kids, to utilize.
Here is a look at the rinks for this weekend.

The tournament will kick off Sunday at 9 a.m. with teams hitting the ice—but stick around all day for a ton of special events. Buffalo Sabres Alumni will be celebrity bartending beginning at noon, Sabretooth will be hanging out to take pictures with and sign autographs and even the infamous Doug Allen will sing National anthems at 3:30 p.m.
