When you watch Alex Tanney’s trick-shot video from his days as a Monmouth College Fighting Scot, you’d think he had a howitzer for an arm, an archer’s pinpoint accuracy and the kind of “aw shucks” personality you’d feel comfortable with hanging around your kids. After the Division III record-setter was not offered a contract by the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs swooped in and signed Tanney to a three-year deal.

The Bills’ May 11 signing of Vince Young seemed to be the death knell for Tanney, although it was possible that Buffalo’s brass would allow him to develop on the practice squad. When Buffalo released Richmond and former USC signal-caller Aaron Corp after the first rookie mini-camp, prospects were brighter for Tanney—for two days, at least.

Just over two weeks ago, however, the Bills opted not to sign Tanney to a contract, and the trick-shot QB—a label that will be tough for him to shed—wound up in Kansas City for a tryout. He apparently impressed enough to be offered a contract, which he gleefully signed. Continued good luck to this underdog quarterback, even if his future isn’t with the Buffalo Bills. We won’t be mad if he unseats Matt Cassel.
