U.S. men’s soccer hits Toronto before World Cup Qualifying

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

There aren’t many opportunities to see the United States Men’s National Soccer team in action, especially so close to Buffalo.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad, playing its most attractive futbol in years—maybe ever, will play northern neighbors Canada in a friendly match at 7 p.m. Sunday night at BMO Field in Toronto. The Yanks are coming off a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Brazil, but a few more fortuitous bounces for the Americans could have resulted in a much tighter affair.

The 90-minute drive up the QEW is far easier (and cheaper!) than flying to Tampa or Guatemala, or the five-and-a-half hour drive to Columbus, OH in September. Tickets for American fans are roughly $35 CA (with fees) and can be purchased here with the promotional code “USA”. There’s even a Groupon available that cuts the cost in half.

Klinsmann stands 6-5-1 in his reign as U.S. manager, but it’s his attacking brand of soccer and perpetual optimism that has spurred the admiration of U.S. soccer supporters. Landon Donovan scored thrice against Scotland, while Michael Bradley and Fabian Johnson have been excellent in the two matches this week. English Premier League star Clint Dempsey was a substitute Wednesday in his return from a groin injury, and it’ll be interesting to see if he receives another short stint in the match against Canada.
