Unlucky Potts to miss season for UB

University at Buffalo running back James Potts will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, the UB Spectrum announced Tuesday.

After scoring his first career touchdown, a 49 yard jaunt where Potts showed breakaway speed to pull away from Morgan State defenders, Potts slowed to a stop in the end zone to begin his celebration. Either his foot got caught in the turf or the torque of his hop mangled his knee, however, and Potts collapsed to the ground in agony. Two fellow Bulls helped him off the field, and the sophomore back couldn’t put weight on his right leg.

The timetable to return from an ACL tear ranges from six to 12 months, and the setback is particularly exasperating for Potts, who was ruled academically ineligible for the entirety of last season. Because he’s played in less than 30% of the Bulls’ games and has suffered a season-ending injury, Potts can apply for a medical red-shirt from the NCAA if he provides documentation.
Behind starter Branden Oliver, the Bulls will trot out junior Brandon Murie and freshman Devin Campbell. Even though Oliver receives the vast majority of the workload, there’s not a ton of comfort or experience lying in wait if he goes down.
Quick healing to Potts, who was a weapon in limited action this fall.
