Watch John Scott punch people

The first day of NHL Free Agency didn’t involve the shuffling of any big names, as marginal players like Brandon Prust, Sheldon Souray, P.A. Parenteau and former Sabre Brad Boyes were the most notable players to sign in a new market Sunday.
The typically cautious Buffalo Sabres did add one new player, however, in enforcer John Scott. The former Ranger is a mountain of a man—6’8, 270 pounds—and he’ll be tasked with one job: protecting the Sabres’ elite players. Considering how Milan Lucic stuck a sword in Buffalo’s 2012 season with his hit of Ryan Miller, it’ll be Scott’s task to make sure Buffalo sends a prompt message if an opponent attacks Miller, Thomas Vanek or Tyler Ennis.
Cody McCormick, one of the bigger Sabres brutes over the last two years, struggled to stay in the lineup due to concussion problems; he mustered only 50 games and 56 penalty minutes in 2012. Scott has five inches and 50 pounds on McCormick, but it’ll be interesting to see how regularly the newcomer will be inserted into the lineup. Surely, he’ll be dressed for Boston and Philadelphia, though.
Judging from the YouTube videos below, there’s no question why Scott is referenced as the “premier heavyweight in today’s game.” He’s got an obscene reach; he’s frankly terrifying to look at; and he toys with opposing fighters at times. This is no first line center or a 20 goal scorer, but Ryan Miller will certainly sleep a little better at night.
Scott mauls Columbus’ Derek Dorsett in what’s an uncomfortably unfair fight, then scoffs at him:
The Ducks’ Sheldon Brookbank can’t even turn his head with Scott’s hay-makers headed toward his dome.
As a member of the Minnesota Wild, Scott pummeled Alexandre Bolduc of the Vancouver Canucks right in front of Bolduc’s bench. Scott had nearly 100 pounds on his opponent in this one, but that’s not the point.
