Tsuj’s Ten: College basketball, 12/27
blog by Ben Tsujimoto • December 27, 2011 @ 7:30am •
I hope glorious, relaxing and enlightening holidays were had by all. Admittedly, I spent most of my Christmas Day eating and watching the NBA, which doesn’t really do a ton of good for the Tsuj’s Ten college basketball blog. Nothing says “holiday” better than a wince-inducing Blake Griffin dunk and several sugar cookies with those delightful…

The University at Buffalo’s men’s basketball match-up tonight against BYU brings back Jimmer nostalgia. One year ago, when the #16-ranked Cougars stormed into Alumni Arena and escaped with a 90-82 victory, Jimmer Fredette scored 28 of his 34 points in the second half, prompting Reggie Witherspoon to refer positively to the BYU guard as “a bad…
Tsuj’s Ten: College basketball, 12/16

They’re sitting at opposite ends of the spectrum: the University at Buffalo, 6-2 overall—all non-conference, rests comfortably during its 10-day lay-off, knowing it owns a quality win (Dayton) and no truly embarrassing losses, while Canisius, 1-7 overall, 0-2 in the MAAC, doesn’t have quite the luxury. While Canisius certainly has more questions…
Tsuj’s Ten: College & high school basketball, 12/14

Let’s get into the 10 quickly since not much has happened since Monday.
1) Star Kentucky swing-man Terrence Jones isn’t getting much love for his play in the Wildcats’ loss to Indiana. ESPN’s Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas shoveled criticism at Jones’ effort, and Kentucky head coach John Calipari echoed the analysts’ sentiments. Wildcat nation is…

I really like when John Calipari frowns. Am I a really sinister, spiteful person? Not really—the Kentucky head coach has been blessed with such an abundance of riches that he’s easy to root against. Don’t get me wrong, Calipari might be the best recruiter in the land, but he’s positioned his program as more of an NBA prep school instead of a…

Champion Flyers provide stiff test for Bulls
blog by Ben Tsujimoto • November 30, 2011 @ 10:05am •
Considering the rise of Boise State, TCU and Houston in college football and Butler, Gonzaga and San Diego State in basketball, the line has really been blurred between mid-major and high-major schools—is there really still a gap in competitiveness?
The Dayton Flyers stomped the notion that mid-majors remain underdogs in the Old Spice Classic,…

:40 —Corey Raley-Ross sticks a jumper from the baseline, and Buffalo holds the ball after a wild layup miss by Canisius. A lopsided affair tonight in favor of Buffalo, and Reggie Witherspoon’s team coasts to an easy non-conference win.

Bulls behind the scenes: UB’s 72-65 win over St. Peter’s
blog by Ben Tsujimoto • November 12, 2011 @ 8:30am •
No, the Buffalo Bulls were not flawless in their season-opening 72-65 victory over St. Peter’s—and frankly, you couldn’t expect them to be. Still, the atmosphere at Alumni Arena—stimulated by the new theater-style lighting and 1400 boisterous students behind the basket—was electric, and Buffalo withstood a late rally to close out its first win.
