Polar Plunge at Woodlawn Beach - PHOTOS

by Chuck Alaimo  •

It’s Dec. 7 here in Buffalo, why not hit the beach?!

That’s exactly what went down Saturday at the seventh annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics New York at Woodlawn Beach.

And “polar” it most certainly was! To quote the Polar Plunge website: “Let’s Get It Started - Freezin for a Reason Begins.”

With an air temperature of around 30 degrees and water temperature at a very cold 41 degrees (I asked one of the police officers), it was most certainly freezin’!

By the end I started losing feeling in my fingers and I was on the sidelines, wearing thermals, a vest, a jacket and fingerless gloves. I can’t even fathom how cold it must have been for those that took the dunk.

Call them brave or call them insane, but several hundred ended up taking the plunge. Kudos to you!  I will gladly watch from the sidelines!
