Bills Backers at McFadden’s in New York City

Even when I leave Buffalo, I am always attracted to Buffalo things and Buffalo people, which is how I ended up at a Bills bar in midtown Manhattan on Sunday.
In New York City, McFadden's -- just a few blocks from Grand Central Station -- is home to a Buffalo reunion whenever there's a Bills game on TV. Western New York expats and Bills fans from around New York City descend on this pub hours before a game is scheduled. On Sunday morning, Bills fans poured into the bar with breakfast sandwiches, coffee and waited for the game to start, and for the bartenders to start slinging beer and wings -- which are all-you-can-eat for $25 for the duration of the game.
Even the bouncer played up the Buffalo mentality. Being from a city where everyone seems to know everyone else, the bouncer referred to me by "Ms. Velasquez" the rest of the afternoon after taking a single look at my ID. A really welcoming touch in a city where you begin to feel like a number more than a human being.
The best part about hanging out at McFadden's is that everyone sheds their New York City shells, and it's truly like being back home in the City of Good Neighbors. Total strangers strike up conversations, and you might even get recognized by a friend of a friends from back home -- as I did as I was leaving the bar to catch my train back to Buffalo.
