Battle of the Bridge: Niagara juts past Canisius - PHOTOS

Last year was a great year for college hockey around the Western New York area. Both Canisius and Niagara made it to the NCAA Division I Tournament last year even though neither team advanced to the second round.
After watching the Golden Griffins take on the Purple Eagles last night at Niagara University, it is safe to say that this year is going to be just as exciting as the last.
The regular season started last weekend for the Niagara Purple Eagles as they dropped back-to-back games in Clarkson and tiptoed to 0-2 on the season.
Canisius opened its season against those same Purple Eagles and what a game it played out to be! Both teams came out looking good in the first period but it was Canisius that took the commanding 3-1 lead after one. The second period was full of hits and fast-paced college hockey with the highlight being Niagara’s Chris Lochner’s top-shelf goal on decorated Canisius goalie Tony Capobianco to tie the game at 4 heading into the second intermission. It all came down to the third period which felt dominated by Niagara who would eventually end up the victor with a final score of 6-4.
It was a great way to start the regular season of college hockey in our area and also another great chapter in the Battle of the Bridge series. If you were not able to travel to the game this past Saturday then make sure to venture out to either Canisius vs. Mercyhurst at Buffalo State on Nov. 9 or Niagara vs. Army at Dwyer Arena on Nov. 15.
