When the fans filled UB’s Alumni Arena Wednesday night to watch a battle between two of the best teams in the MAC, no one had in mind a scenario like the offensive battle that unfolded.
Three Bulls scored 20 or more points: Joshua Freelove had 21, while Javon McCrea and Jarod Oldham both had 20 as the UB Bulls defeated the Akron Zips 96-90.
Two really good teams played very aggressive basketball. In the first half it was back and forth with the Bulls finishing the half up 48-42. During the second sequence the Bulls pulled ahead early and lead by double digits for a bit, however, the Zips (we’ll explain what Zips are later) came back strong, and it was a fight to the finish with the Bulls coming out on top.
Both of these teams are in the hunt for MAC Tournament byes and it was fun to watch quality, fast-paced basketball at Alumni Arena, especially when the Bulls are victorious. If you haven’t been to a Bulls game this year, you only have a couple chances for home games this year. You need to go for it.
Zips is short for Zippers. Remember the Zipper boots, the rubber galoshes with the zipper running up the front? Well it seems they are Akron’s chicken wings and as Akron is the “rubber city,” thus the Zips.
