Ask Avery: Fair-weather footwear

blog by Avery Hartmans  •   •

Dear Avery,
This weather is killing me. It’s wet and rainy so I feel like I still need boots, but then my outfit looks too wintery. How do I step up my footwear game, spring-style?

Trying to find the right shoes to wear this time of year is a daily conundrum for me.

I have a whole outfit on and then realize I basically only have snow boots or sandals to wear with it.

Trend spotting: Music festival fashionistas - PHOTOS

It seems that hipster festival-goers at Coachella and Bonnaroo are making serious waves in fashion these days.

Stuck in the middle of a desert for days on end—usually crammed in a tent or RV with other eager sweaty young partiers—has somehow turned the tables on style: on dirt, grass and atop a friend’s shoulders have emerged as an alt-runway.

I am going to assume here that…

Ask Avery: New life, new look

blog by Avery Hartmans  •   •

Dear Avery,
I’m a 22-year-old guy moving to a new city after graduation and my female friends keep telling me I need to improve my wardrobe. How do I fit in in a big city out West? What should I be shopping for?

Moving out West for a brand-new job sounds like just about the most exciting thing ever, so you’ll definitely need the brand-new wardrobe to match.

Having been to…

Who is dying to shove their winter wardrobe in a storage unit and say goodbye to its existence forever? Anyone?

Who am I kidding? We all are.

If you have time this week, I encourage you to start sifting through your summer clothes. Even if you aren’t going to wear any of them yet, just seeing and holding them can be an extremely therapeutic experience.

If you happen to…

Ask Avery: Yellow fever

blog by Avery Hartmans  •   •

Dear Avery,
I’ve been on a real yellow kick lately, as I think it’s a good transition color for spring. The problem is, I never wear yellow because I think it looks bad on me (I’m blonde).

What are some cute pieces I could pick up for spring that will look good with my hair and skin tone and act as a good pop of color?

Funny you should ask, because I voluntarily wore the…

Ask Avery: White denim dos and don’ts

blog by Avery Hartmans  •   •

Dear Avery,
Now that it’s getting closer to spring, I’m thinking about wearing white jeans again. But are there right ways and wrong ways to wear them? I always feel a little uncomfortable in all that white.

I’m pretty sure white jeans are one of those fashion choices we’re all going to look back on in 20 years and shake our heads sadly.

There’s something about white…

Trend spotting: Flashy floral - PHOTOS

Remember when these colors were only acceptable on your grandma, Jimmy Buffet, or a skyscraper in South Beach?

Well, bright florals that once only adorned curtains in Florida retirement homes have made a serious splash in the fashion world.

Love it or hate it, nothing that will brighten your day (and everyone around you for that matter) more than a blazer like this.

After…

Ask Avery: Spring 2014 must-haves

blog by Avery Hartmans  •   •

Dear Avery,
What are the trends for spring? I’m ready for a wardrobe overhaul.

After yet another blizzard, I think we’re all about ready for springtime.

This may be an unreasonable dream, since the 10-day forecast predicts yet another week of dreariness — gee, we might even get up to 37 degrees! — but that just means you can spend more time shopping for your new spring…

If you stayed inside yesterday—I have nothing to say to you.

It was a rare day in Buffalo. And by rare I mean W-A-R-M. So for your mental health’s sanity, I really hope you took advantage of a day that now feels like it was just a dream.

Despite my nagging, I have no doubt you did make it into nature’s obscure temperature gift yesterday because the plethora of people I saw…

Ask Avery: From work to play

blog by Avery Hartmans  •   •

Dear Avery,
I was recently invited out for drinks at a really nice place after work with a guy I’ve been interested in for a while. The problem was, I didn’t bring a change of clothes and I didn’t have time to run home, so I went in my boring work clothes. What little things can I change to transition my work outfit to a night out?

There’s nothing worse than being trapped…
