A taste for luxury

To my surprise, and what I expect will be a surprise to many other Buffalo bargainistas, it turns out we are dishing out major dough for designer merchandise more than ever. The economic shortfall has not stopped consumers from splurging on those must-have designer items. Coming from my perspective as a busy senior in college with an unpaid internship and a bank full of loan debt…

Ask Avery: men’s spring fashion; mother-of-the-bride style

Dear Avery,
My daughter is getting married this summer and I need to find a mother of the bride dress. My problem is finding something that suits my style: modern and youthful. I might be a mother but I don’t want to look matronly!

After doing some research, I discovered that a lot of traditional mother-of-the-bride dresses range from unfortunate to downright hideous. Some are…

A celebration of couture and charity at Salvatore's Italian Gardens -- welcome to Handbag Happy Hour.

Macy's presented the second Handbag Happy Hour on Friday night at Salvatore's Italian Gardens in Depew. Area women were welcome to enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while bidding on countless designer and one-of-a-kind bags. Delightful! All of the proceeds were donated to the work of Everywoman Opportunity Center.

Here’s an unusual opportunity for tonight: bid on a handbag once daintily dangled by Cindy Crawford or Paris Hilton. Your friends would be envious, right? Sure, you might not be able to fill it with the valuables of a legendary model or risque heiress, but it’d be still awesome to flaunt a new eye-catching accessory.

The 2012 Handbag Happy Hour will be held from 6 to 10 p.m.…

Ask Avery: Get your Irish up

Avery,
I plan on going to the St. Patrick’s Day parade this year like I do every year, but I’m sick of looking like an idiot in an overload of green. This might seem silly, but how do I look festive without going overboard?

Personally, I think you can never wear too much green, but that might just be the Irish in me. It’s likely that everyone you see on St. Patrick’s Day…

Young Money Blog: Looking sharp on the job

blog by Caitlin Campbell McNulty  •   •

Dress right for work, young folks.

After talking to Lauren Byrd, the founder of Mercedes-Benz of Buffalo Fashion Week, for my last Young Money blog, I started thinking about fashion a little bit—more specifically, navigating the world of workplace fashion. Gone are the days when I could roll out of bed, throw on some black pants and a white shirt and head off to my shift as a waitress. Now, I think about whether I…

Dan Gigante, founder of You and Who, was inspired to combine city pride and charitable works when he launched the T-shirt company.

Now, You and Who is growing. More than 30 cities now participate in the project, which allows locals of participating cities to purchase shirts designed by local artists. And for every shirt purchased, one is donated to an area charity.

With some…

The fashion of your fantasies

When it comes to fashion, in my opinion at least, accessories don’t get the spotlight they deserve. Looking through Glamour’s Spring 2012 fashion trends, there’s major emphasis on bright colors—tangerine, apparently—color-blocking, and bold prints, but there was little attention paid to accessories.

From 5:30 p.m. to 10 Sunday, Tralf Music Hall, 622 Main St., Buffalo plays host…
