Get the look: Arkells, Heart

In this week’s Get the Look, we go “old school meets new school” with a up-and-coming rock band from Canada and a female veteran rock duo from the 1970s.
Formed in 2006 just across the border in Hamilton, Ontario, Arkells has been generating a lot of buzz over the last year. After a game-changing performance at the Burlington Sound of Music Festival in 2010, they’ve hit the ground running and haven’t looked back.
Boasting a casual chic style, the band is no stranger to denim button-downs and an affinity to the color red—a throwback to their Canadian roots, perhaps. Dark wash denim jeans are a reoccurring trend for pants with these guys as well.
First finding success in the 1970s, Heart is a female powerhouse duo that has sold over 30 million records worldwide. I thought their old school inspired looks would be a great challenge for Get the Look to find a modern twist. Today, vintage style is all the rage and some of the outfits these women have rocked are phenomenal. With styles inspired form the 70s, 80s and 90s, these girls are the epitome of the female rocker.
You can catch Akells at 6 p.m. this Thursday for a free show as part of the Thursday at the Harbor series. Opening for the group will be Gomez and Elliott Brood. Heart will be hitting the stage at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday this week at Artpark. Tickets for this show run $15 and can also be purchased through Tickets.com.
