Summer Dos and Don’ts for girls

blog by Avery Hartmans • June 17, 2011 @ 11:30am
The official start of summer is only a few days away and with the vernal equinox comes my permission to break out all your favorite warm-weather ensembles. But a whole new season also means tons of new opportunities to commit crimes of fashion. Lucky for you, I’m here to provide a few summer dos and don’ts in order to keep you looking hot as the temperature rises.
Do remember that when it comes to showing skin, less is more. Hiking up your hemline and lowering your neckline isn’t always the answer. There are more subtle ways to show off what you’ve got without revealing it all.
Don’t be afraid of your bathing suit. Put it on and go to the beach without fear – chances are the only person who will notice your flaws is you. Summer is the time to have fun and get tan so don’t let your self-consciousness get in the way of a good time.
Do get a good pair of sunglasses. They’re an investment piece so don’t be afraid to spend a little more on a nice pair of shades that will last you a few years. But stick to a classic shape – fashions change quickly and you don’t want to feel out of style by next summer.
Don’t spend so much time on your hair and makeup. Not only will you waste unnecessary time and sweat trying to look perfect, you’ll look out of place amongst your tanned, wavy-haired peers. Summer is all about looking natural and sun-kissed so relax and lay off the eyeliner.
Do get out and exercise. Face it: you can’t hide under a thick sweater anymore or stay inside on the couch. If the weather is gorgeous, you better be walking or jogging through Delaware Park or biking through the suburbs. No ifs, ands or buts. Get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts.
Don’t throw your style out the window just because it’s summertime. “It’s too hot” is not an excuse for looking like a slob. Even if it’s 90 degrees, you can still manage to pull yourself together. An easy trick is the sundress: it’s versatile, comfortable and will make you look like a classy lady even if you’re secretly sweating off all your water weight.
