Summer’s biggest trend: the harness?

blog by Avery Hartmans • July 01, 2011 @ 2:31pm
Whether or not you think Lady Gage is fashionable, you have to credit her as being a major trendsetter. The eclectic songstress (to put it politely) is basically the reason the harness has made a comeback.
The singer recently collaborated with Donatella Versace for Gaga’s new “Edge of Glory” video. Whether or not Lady Gaga was a worthy recipient, Versace opened up the archives for the first time ever and allowed Gaga to wear a black studded harness from Gianni Versace’s final collection.
Lady Gaga also featured harnesses in her recent performance on Saturday Night Live, dressing her backup dancers in shiny gold numbers, while Rihanna donned a white one for her performance of S&M at the Billboard Music Awards. Many other actresses and models have been seen wearing some form of a harness lately and it begs the question: Is this fashion trend really here to stay?
If you ask me, there’s really no way to wear a harness. At best, you look as though you should be put on a leash and taken around the block. At worst, you look like you belong in a torture chamber or an adult film. I just don’t see this trend being edgy and chic – or practical, for that matter. To what type of event does one wear a harness? Certainly not to school, church, or out to dinner with your parents.
I don’t think the harness is ready to leave the sex shops in favor of the runway. For now, it might be best just to wear it in the privacy of your own home.
